In Addis Ababa, the 48th Session of the African Union Executive Council has entered its second day, with discussions centered on key continental priorities, particularly water and sanitation. The meeting brings together Foreign Ministers from across African Union member states at a critical time for the continent.

Water access indicators across Africa remain far from satisfactory. Limited investment in water infrastructure continues to affect millions, contributing to preventable deaths and the spread of disease, with women and children bearing the heaviest burden.

The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa has underscored that water is a key driver of the continent’s economic growth and sustainable development. Speaking at the opening of the 39th African Union Summit on water, UNECA Executive Secretary Claver Gatete called for stronger political commitment and increased investment to address Africa’s pressing water challenges.
