Sudanese media have reported that 48 people were killed and more than 152 were injured in clashes between the South Sudanese army and opposition forces in a northeastern border town.
According to local media reports on Sunday, the clashes began on Saturday when forces of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) attacked a South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) base in Burebiey, a town located along the border with Ethiopia in Nasir County, Upper Nile State.
State Governor James Koang told local Eye Radio that more than 48 members of the SPLM-IO and the allied militia, the White Army, were killed and more than 148 were injured, while the SSPDF recorded no human losses and only four soldiers were injured.
James Koang called for calm and asked opposition forces to stop attacks on the army.
