Amnesty International has demanded the immediate and unconditional release of former Malian Prime Minister Moussa Mara, who was sentenced to two years in prison and fined 500,000 CFA francs.

The rights group condemned the conviction as a travesty of justice, accusing Malian authorities of disregarding constitutional and international human rights obligations.

In a statement on Monday, Amnesty cited violations of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, both ratified by Mali.
