A senior commander of the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISIS-GS) has been killed by the unified forces of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) in northern Mali. The operation took place in Ménaka, a region that has long been a hotspot for extremist activity.
The commander, identified as Boubacar Demougui, was a key figure in ISIS-GS operations across the Sahel. He was reportedly involved in numerous kidnappings and assassinations that destabilized communities in the area.
According to AES sources, several of Demougui’s close collaborators were also eliminated during the operation. Authorities describe the development as a significant blow to the group’s command structure.
The operation underscores the growing coordination among AES member states—Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso—in tackling terrorism and restoring security in the Sahel region.
