The Nigeria Police Force has defended its request for the names and other details of individuals planning to participate in the upcoming nationwide #EndBadGovernance protest in August.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Nigeria Police Force spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi explained that collecting details about protest participants is standard practice to ensure safety and prevent unlawful activities.
However, this justification has been questioned by many Nigerians, including activist Deji Adeyanju, who are skeptical about the true intentions behind the police’s request.
Meanwhile as the threat of nationwide protests on August 1 draws near, the Minister of Nigeria’s capital city, Abuja, Nyesom Wike, has warned against any acts capable of causing destruction in the city.
At a Town Hall meeting Saturday, representatives of religious, youth, and civil society groups all spoke out against the planned protests, echoing the Minister’s concerns.
