West Africa Democracy Radio (WADR) has launched a week-long training in Dakar dedicated to strengthening investigative and solution-based journalism across the region.

The initiative comes at a critical time for West and sub-Saharan Africa, where shifting political dynamics, democratic transitions, and rising insecurity have, in some instances, resulted in military takeovers. In such a fragile media landscape, journalists are increasingly required not only to investigate complex issues but also to report in ways that promote accountability without exacerbating tensions.

Organised in partnership with the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), the programme brings together media professionals from conflict-affected and politically sensitive environments. It seeks to equip them with practical tools to counter disinformation, verify sources, strengthen fact-checking mechanisms, and produce conflict-sensitive reports that are accurate, balanced, and responsible.

Beyond traditional investigative techniques, the training also places emphasis on solution-based journalism, encouraging reporters to highlight responses, innovations, and community-driven efforts addressing governance, security, and social challenges. The goal is to shift narratives from crisis-focused coverage to reporting that also explores pathways forward.

Over the course of the week, participants will engage in practical workshops, case studies, peer-learning sessions, and guided field exercises led by experienced media trainers and governance experts. Discussions will also address journalist safety, ethical reporting standards, and strategies for navigating shrinking civic space.
