Gabon’s media regulator, the High Authority for Communication, has ordered the suspension of social media platforms across Gabon until further notice.
Officials say the move is aimed at curbing the spread of false information, hate speech, cyberbullying, and the unauthorized release of personal data, which they warn are fuelling tension and undermining national stability.
The regulator maintains that freedom of expression remains guaranteed, despite the restriction.
The decision comes amid growing social unrest, including ongoing strikes by teachers and protests from workers in several public sectors, posing an early challenge for President Brice Oligui Nguema.
Authorities say the suspension is intended as a temporary measure to restore calm while mechanisms are put in place to better regulate online content and prevent further escalation of tensions. They argue that unchecked digital communication has amplified grievances and misinformation during an already sensitive period.
Observers note that the move could significantly affect communication, business promotion, and access to information for citizens who rely heavily on social platforms for daily activities.
The development is likely to reignite debate over how governments balance national security concerns with digital rights and open access to information.
