In Nigeria, months of intense debate over the country’s electoral reform have reached a conclusion. On Wednesday, President Bola Tinubu officially signed the Electoral Re-enactment Bill 2026 into law, marking a key milestone in preparations for the 2027 general elections.

A central provision of the new legislation introduces the electronic transmission of election results, addressing longstanding calls from civil society groups for increased transparency and credibility in the electoral process.

President Tinubu emphasized the importance of safeguarding the system against technical glitches and cyber threats, stressing that robust measures are needed to protect the integrity of Nigeria’s elections as the country gears up for 2027.
