The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has announced that mpox is no longer considered a regional public health emergency in Africa.

Director General Jean Kaseya noted that while mpox remains endemic in certain areas, the crisis phase has passed thanks to improved detection, treatment, and vaccination efforts. Over five million mpox vaccines have been administered across 16 countries since 2024.

Confirmed cases dropped by 60 percent between early and late 2025, and deaths fell from 2.6 percent to 0.6 percent. The decision follows the World Health Organization’s September 2025 announcement that mpox was no longer a global health emergency.

Africa CDC cautioned, however, that the virus has not been eradicated, urging continued vigilance, investment, and innovation to prevent a potential resurgence.
