In our feature this morning, we are talking about Mental health. This situation affects individuals across all life stages, and when poorly managed, it can lead to severe consequences like suicide. Often invisible, mental health disorders can affect even those who appear outwardly fine.

The World Health Organization reports nearly 1 billion people globally face mental health challenges, urging governments to act. In Nigeria, over 7 million people suffer from depression amid a lack of infrastructure and professionals.

According to reports from the World Health Organisation, suicide in Nigeria is experiencing a “silent and rising epidemic,” with estimates suggesting approximately 15,000 to 16,000 suicide deaths annually.

The country is now ranked sixth globally in suicide rates, with men comprising nearly 79% of these cases.

This report by Usman Umar explores the depth of the crisis.
