Fears over electoral transparency in Nigeria are mounting following the Senate’s passage of the 2026 Electoral Act Amendment Bill.

Lawmakers say the bill strengthens the legal framework for future elections, but civil society groups have criticised the National Assembly for not making electronic transmission of results mandatory.

The decision has sparked threats of nationwide protests from organized labour and drawn sharp criticism from democracy advocates across the region.

From Abuja, correspondent Yecenu Sasetu reports that the Senate has scheduled an emergency plenary for Tuesday to clarify its position.
