Former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has ignited national debate after urging stricter government regulation on the construction of churches and mosques.

The Nobel Laureate maintains that while religious freedom is constitutionally guaranteed, it must be balanced with citizens’ rights to peaceful and orderly living environments.

Her remarks come amid growing concerns over the proliferation of religious institutions in residential neighbourhoods.
