The transitional parliament of Guinea-Bissau approved a draft constitutional revision on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, marking the first amendment in 30 years since 1995.

The new framework significantly strengthens the powers of the President, while maintaining the country’s semi-presidential system.

Under the revision, the president will serve as head of government, lead the executive branch, preside over the Council of Ministers, and continue as head of state.

The constitutional changes follow the November 26, 2025, coup that forced former president Umaro Sissoko Embaló to leave the country.
