The Government of Sierra Leone will observe its first National Remembrance Day on Sunday, January 18, 2026, according to the Ministry of Information and Civic Education.

The day is intended to honor victims and survivors of the civil war, reflect on the cost of conflict, and reaffirm Sierra Leone’s commitment to peace, unity, and democratic coexistence.

An official notice says the observance will begin with a presidential address formally inaugurating National Remembrance Day.

However, some human rights activists, including Bernadette French, have raised concerns about whether the initiative will lead to concrete progress on justice, accountability, and reparations for war victims and survivors.
