Opposition leaders Fernando Dias and Domingos Simões Pereira have refused an offer to join Guinea-Bissau’s transitional government days after regaining their freedom. The military authorities who seized power in the November 26 coup had invited both politicians to participate in government and hold seats on the National Transitional Council.

The opposition figures declined, stating that accepting would amount to legitimizing the coup leaders. Pereira, who spent over two months in detention, remains under house arrest, while Dias—who had taken refuge in the Nigerian embassy—faces restrictions including a ban on public statements.

Though ECOWAS described their release as progress toward constitutional order, both leaders insist they will not participate in what they characterize as an attempt to whitewash the military’s image. Their rejection underscores the deep political divide between the junta and civilian opposition forces.

The standoff highlights ongoing tensions in Guinea-Bissau’s fragile transition. While regional mediators push for dialogue, opposition figures remain steadfast in their refusal to lend credibility to military rule through formal government participation.
