Parliament in Ghana has resumed sittings for the second session of the Ninth Parliament, facing a heavy legislative backlog as key government priorities begin to shape debate in the House.
Among the issues drawing public attention is an announcement by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga that government plans to introduce legislation to rename Kotoka International Airport back to Accra International Airport. He says the bill will follow due process and reflect public sentiment.
The Minority, however, is questioning government priorities, particularly what it describes as a lack of urgency in passing the LGBTQ bill, as more than six hundred outstanding bills and parliamentary questions await consideration.
Meanwhile, lawmakers are also awaiting a final report into disturbances that disrupted vetting proceedings last year, when property was damaged during a sitting of the Appointments Committee.
