It has been 27 years since the assassination of Burkina Faso’s investigative journalist Norbert Zongo, yet justice remains elusive. On Saturday, December 13, civil society organizations renewed demands for accountability during a commemorative ceremony in Ouagadougou.

Family members, journalists, and activists gathered at the Gounghin municipal cemetery, where they laid a wreath at Zongo’s grave. The annual tribute reflects persistent frustration over the lack of progress in a case that has stalled for more than two decades.

Participants described the atmosphere as deeply emotional, stressing that Zongo’s killing remains a symbol of impunity and unresolved attacks against press freedom in the country.

Supporters continue to point to François Compaoré, brother of former president Blaise Compaoré, as the alleged mastermind. Although arrested in France in 2017 under an international warrant, his extradition to Burkina Faso remains unresolved, further fueling calls for justice.
