Journalism stakeholders in Senegal have renewed calls for professionalism and ethical reporting as a means of strengthening democracy and good governance in the subregion. The appeal comes amid growing threats and pressure on media practitioners worldwide.
The call was made during the 8th edition of the E-Jicom Journalism Awards held in Dakar, an event celebrating excellence and resilience in journalism. The ceremony recognized outstanding work by journalists across various categories.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Omar Ndiaye, Director of E-Jicom, urged young journalists to remain guided by ethics, accuracy, and professional codes of conduct. He stressed that credible journalism plays a critical role in promoting accountability and social good.
Dr. Ndiaye also emphasized the importance of protecting journalists’ safety, noting that a secure media environment is essential for democracy to thrive. Participants echoed calls for stronger safeguards to enable journalists to work freely and responsibly.
