Nigeria’s National Assembly is moving to strengthen the country’s electoral framework ahead of the 2027 general elections by proposing tougher penalties for vote buying and other electoral offences.

The measures are contained in the Electoral Bill 2025, which is currently under consideration by lawmakers.

The proposed reforms are aimed at improving the credibility of elections and deterring practices that undermine the integrity of the democratic process.

If passed, the new provisions are expected to significantly reshape election conduct and enforcement ahead of the 2027 polls.
