In Ghana, the Minority in Parliament is demanding the swift reversal of newly announced utility tariff hikes by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC). The adjustments, set to take effect next year, will see water tariffs rise by 15.92 percent and electricity costs increase by 9.86 percent.
According to the PURC, the increments form part of its scheduled five-year major review aimed at ensuring cost recovery and maintaining service quality. The Commission argues that the adjustments are necessary for the sustainability of utility operations.
However, Minority MPs sharply disagree, describing the hikes as punitive and unjustified. Speaking to journalists in Parliament, they warned that the increases would worsen the already difficult economic conditions faced by many Ghanaians.
The Minority is urging the PURC to reconsider the decision, arguing that consumers cannot absorb additional financial burdens at a time of rising living costs and economic uncertainty.
