UN Secretary-General António Guterres has praised the peace and economic agreement recently signed between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda. The deal, brokered by the United States, is being hailed as a crucial step toward easing long-standing tensions in the region.

Guterres described the agreement as an important move toward restoring trust and stabilizing eastern Congo, an area plagued for years by conflict linked to the M23 rebellion. He also commended the progress made under both the Doha process and the African Union–led initiatives aimed at de-escalation.

The UN Chief urged all parties to honor their commitments, maintain the ceasefire, and continue constructive dialogue. His comments signal renewed international support for ongoing peace efforts in the Great Lakes region.

Thursday’s signing marks a fresh opportunity for both nations to rebuild confidence and address the humanitarian and security challenges that have deeply affected communities in eastern Congo. Whether this momentum leads to lasting peace will depend on consistent cooperation and follow-through from all sides.
