ECOWAS is intensifying diplomatic pressure in Guinea-Bissau as the region pushes for a swift return to constitutional order after the November 26 military coup. Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio, who currently chairs the regional bloc, arrived in Bissau on Monday for an emergency mission alongside ECOWAS Commission President Dr. Omar Alieu Touray.
The visit comes after Guinea-Bissau’s suspension from all ECOWAS decision-making bodies, a move taken in response to the abrupt takeover. The regional organisation is demanding the immediate proclamation of the November 23 presidential election results and the restoration of democratic governance.
While deposed President Umaro Sissoco Embaló has been evacuated to Dakar and later Brazzaville, several political figures remain in military custody. Upon his arrival, Maada Bio was received by transitional leader General Horta N’Tam, who has pledged to lead a one-year transition and prioritise the fight against drug trafficking.
ECOWAS maintains that the armed forces must return to their barracks and allow constitutional institutions to resume their functions, signalling that sustained regional pressure will continue until democratic order is restored.
