The U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, says weekend talks with a Ukrainian delegation were “productive,” but stressed that more work is needed to reach a deal to end the Russia-Ukraine war.

The meeting took place in Hallandale Beach, Florida, with Ukraine’s new chief negotiator, Rustem Umerov, leading the delegation. Umerov recently stepped in after former negotiator Andriy Yermak resigned following an anti-corruption raid.

Also at the table were President Donald Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff—who’s expected to travel to Moscow next week—and Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner.

Sunday’s discussions come after two weeks of intense diplomacy sparked by the leak of a 28-point U.S. peace plan that alarmed Kyiv and several European allies for appearing to favor Russia.

Rubio said the talks were not only about stopping the fighting, but ensuring Ukraine’s long-term prosperity. He told the delegation the goal remains a “sovereign, independent, and prosperous” Ukraine.
