Liberia is sounding the alarm over the growing surge in online abuse targeting women and girls, as the country joins the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign. The rise in digital harassment, threats, and exploitation has sparked renewed calls for stronger protections and accountability.
Over the weekend, the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, together with UN Women and several civil society partners, launched national activities marking the 16-day campaign. The event also coincided with the National GBV Conference, where stakeholders highlighted the urgency of addressing technology-facilitated violence.
Officials stressed that digital spaces must be made safer, noting that online attacks often spill into real-world harm, silencing women and widening existing inequalities.
The campaign is expected to drive nationwide dialogue, push for stronger legal frameworks, and equip communities with tools to combat all forms of gender-based violence — both offline and online.
