Ghana has sharply condemned the military takeover in Guinea-Bissau, calling it an unconstitutional attack on democratic governance. The statement from Accra comes amid growing regional alarm over the sudden power grab.
In a release issued Wednesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Ghana is “profoundly concerned” about the developments, noting that the takeover occurred just days after Guinea-Bissau held peaceful presidential and legislative elections on November 23.
The government emphasized that such actions undermine democratic progress in West Africa, where several nations continue to struggle with recurring coups and political instability. Ghana stressed the importance of respecting the will of the people and safeguarding electoral processes.
Accra is urging the swift and unconditional restoration of constitutional order, reaffirming its commitment to working with ECOWAS and international partners to support stability and democracy in Guinea-Bissau.
