In The Gambia, a technical report has shed light on the rising impacts of the Urban Heat Island effect in Banjul. The study, released under the theme Building Climate Resilient Cities: Addressing Urban Heat Challenges in Banjul, aims to guide policymakers in developing adaptive strategies for the capital.

The report was launched by the Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) for Climate Action programme in partnership with the Banjul City Council. It provides detailed insights into temperature variations, contributing factors, and potential mitigation measures to reduce heat stress in urban areas.

Implemented with support from Environment and Climate Change Canada, the MRV initiative equips city planners and climate stakeholders with data-driven solutions to enhance resilience against extreme urban heat events.

Officials emphasize that the findings will help inform infrastructure planning, green space development, and community-level interventions to protect residents and build a climate-resilient Banjul.
