Authorities in Nigeria’s Kwara State have ordered the closure of all schools across five local government areas following new security threats linked to armed groups operating in the region. The directive affects dozens of institutions in Ifelodun, Ekiti, Irepodun, Isin, and Oke Ero.
Education commissioner Lawal Olohungbebe said the measure is a precaution to keep students safe as security forces intensify operations. He added that officials aim to prevent attackers from using children as cover while fleeing surveillance and military pressure.
The decision follows a violent attack on a church in Eruku, where gunmen killed four worshippers and abducted at least 35 people during a live-streamed service. The incident has heightened fear among communities and prompted a wider security sweep across neighbouring districts.
Boarding schools in Irepodun have also been closed after intelligence reports suggested they could be targeted, with authorities urging residents to remain vigilant as operations continue.
