More than 1,900 people have been killed in terrorist attacks across West Africa since the start of 2025, according to new figures released by ECOWAS. The deaths stem from 450 attacks recorded throughout the sub-region.

ECOWAS Commission President Dr. Omar Alieu Touray disclosed the data during a briefing at the United Nations Security Council, where discussions focused on strengthening regional cooperation against terrorism in West Africa and the Sahel.

Dr. Touray stressed that the scale and pace of extremist violence demand urgent, coordinated action among national governments and international partners.

He noted that without enhanced intelligence sharing, cross-border collaboration, and sustained funding for counterterrorism efforts, the region risks further destabilization.
