The G20 summit has opened in Johannesburg, bringing together the world’s major economies for two days of high-stakes discussions. For many nations in the global south, the meeting represents a crucial opportunity for inclusive and solution-driven dialogue in a time of geopolitical fragmentation.
South Africa, the host nation, is pushing the theme “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability” as leaders confront global crises ranging from conflict to energy insecurity and economic instability. Delegates say the theme reflects the urgent need for coordinated action.
However, the absence of U.S. President Donald Trump has raised concerns among international relations analysts, who argue that his non-attendance may weaken collective decision-making at a critical moment. Some fear it could slow momentum on issues requiring joint commitment.
Even so, experts like Dr. Michael Nketisiah remain cautiously optimistic. They believe that with renewed cooperation among other major economies, meaningful progress is still possible despite the diplomatic gap left by Washington’s absence.
