Niger has signed a 98.7-billion-CFA-franc financing agreement with the African Development Bank to expand access to drinking water and sanitation in the Zinder region. The investment targets long-standing gaps in clean water supply and basic hygiene services for communities in the southeast.
The agreement was formalised by Prime Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine and AfDB Country Representative Mamadou Tangara. Officials say the project will support new water infrastructure, treatment facilities, and improved sanitation systems across several districts.
For residents of Zinder, the funding represents a major step toward resolving chronic shortages that have affected health, livelihoods, and daily living conditions. Many communities continue to rely on unsafe water sources, increasing the risk of waterborne diseases.
Authorities believe the initiative will significantly strengthen public health and support economic resilience in the region. The government and AfDB have pledged close collaboration to ensure timely and effective implementation.
