A tragic stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra has claimed the lives of six potential recruits during the Ghana Armed Forces’ 2025/2026 recruitment exercise. The incident occurred early Wednesday morning, moments before the official commencement of the screening process.
Preliminary reports indicate that an unexpected surge of applicants broke through security barriers and rushed into the stadium gates ahead of schedule, triggering the deadly chaos around 6:20 a.m. Many others sustained injuries and are receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital.
In a statement, the Ghana Armed Forces expressed deep regret over the incident and extended condolences to the bereaved families. Acting Director General of Public Relations, Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, assured the public that medical teams are working tirelessly to stabilize the injured.
Authorities say efforts are underway to contact the families of the deceased while investigations continue to prevent similar occurrences in future recruitment exercises.
