More than nine thousand Gambians affected by recent floods and climate shocks are set to receive critical food support, following the launch of a new emergency assistance initiative by the World Food Programme (WFP) and the Government of Japan.
The project was officially unveiled on Wednesday in Basse, located in the Upper River Region, where flood survivors, government officials, and community groups gathered for the ceremony. Authorities say the initiative aims to cushion vulnerable households still struggling to recover from severe weather-related disruptions.
According to WFP, the assistance will target families most impacted by the floods, ensuring they have access to essential food supplies during this difficult recovery period. The collaboration underscores Japan’s continued support for humanitarian response efforts in The Gambia.
Officials and community leaders have welcomed the intervention, describing it as timely and vital for restoring stability and dignity to affected households.
