In Guinea, political opposition groups and civil society organizations are strongly condemning transitional leader General Mamadi Doumbouya’s decision to run in the December 28 presidential election.

The Forces Vives of Guinea—a major coalition comprising parties such as Cellou Dalein Diallo’s UFDG, Sidya Touré’s UFR, and the RPG Arc-en-ciel of former president Alpha Condé—accuses Doumbouya of violating his oath to hand over power to civilians at the end of the transition.

In a sharply worded statement, the coalition described his candidacy as a “betrayal” of the Transitional Charter and a breach of commitments made before the Supreme Court, Guinean citizens, and the international community.

Civil society actors are also rejecting the move, warning that Doumbouya’s decision undermines the credibility of the transition and risks deepening political tensions ahead of the poll.
