In Kenya, civil society groups are stepping up calls for the release of two Kenyan human rights defenders who have been missing in Uganda for nearly a month.
Bob Njagi and Nicholas Oyoo, both members of the Free Kenya Movement, were reportedly abducted by armed men in Uganda on October 1st. The pair had travelled to support opposition leader Bobi Wine’s election campaign.
Kampala authorities insist they are not holding the two activists, but that claim has been rejected by NGOs and human rights groups.
Online petitions and street demonstrations have been growing since their disappearance, with activists in Nairobi urging the Kenyan government to intensify efforts for their release.
Felix Wambua from the Free Kenya Movement says pressure is mounting for answers, while Vocal Africa’s executive director, Hussein Khalid, has accused Ugandan authorities of concealing information.
The Kenya Human Rights Commission has announced a protest outside the Ugandan Embassy in Nairobi this Tuesday, demanding the safe return of Njagi and Oyoo.
