The United Nations has called for safe passage for civilians trapped in el-Fasher, Sudan, after paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) claimed control of the army’s main base in the city. The Sudanese military has not confirmed losing the site, which would be a major gain for the RSF in the ongoing civil war.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres described the fighting as a “terrible escalation”, warning that civilian suffering is “unbearable.” El-Fasher, the army’s last foothold in Darfur, has been besieged by the RSF and allies for 18 months. Heavy clashes erupted after RSF fighters captured the home of the North Darfur governor.
UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk cautioned that the risk of large-scale, ethnically motivated atrocities is growing daily. The Sudanese Doctors’ Network reported that dozens have already been killed, and medical facilities and pharmacies looted. RSF officials deny targeting civilians, claiming they protect those fleeing conflict zones.
Communication lines to el-Fasher are mostly cut. Residents who fled describe harrowing scenes, with many fearing for the safety of children, the elderly, and the wounded left behind.
