Seychelles opposition leader Patrick Herminie has emerged victorious in the country’s presidential election, defeating incumbent President Wavel Ramkalawan in a closely contested run-off vote, according to results announced by the Electoral Commission early Sunday.

Official figures show that Herminie secured 52.7% of the votes, compared to 47.3% for Ramkalawan, marking a decisive yet competitive end to one of the island nation’s most tightly fought races in recent years.

In his victory address at the electoral commission’s headquarters in Victoria, the 62-year-old leader expressed gratitude to voters for what he described as a “clear choice for change.” He vowed to prioritize addressing the rising cost of living, revitalizing public services, and fostering national unity. “I will be a president for all Seychellois, regardless of political affiliation. It’s time to bridge divisions, end favouritism, and create equal opportunities for every citizen to thrive,” he declared to loud applause from supporters.

Outgoing president Wavel Ramkalawan, who has been in power since 2020, congratulated Herminie on his victory and called for a peaceful transfer of power, emphasizing the need to preserve the country’s democratic traditions. “The people have spoken. Democracy has prevailed. I urge all Seychellois to support the incoming administration as we continue to build our nation,” Ramkalawan said in a televised address.

The election was closely watched both locally and internationally, with observers praising the peaceful conduct of the polls and the high voter turnout, which stood at over 80%. The run-off followed an initial round that failed to produce an outright winner, highlighting the increasingly competitive political landscape in Seychelles.

Patrick Herminie, a former Speaker of the National Assembly and leader of the opposition United Seychelles party, campaigned on a platform centered on economic reform, social welfare, and political inclusion. His message resonated strongly with younger voters and working-class citizens who have expressed frustration over the rising cost of basic goods, unemployment, and perceived inequalities in access to opportunities.

Analysts say Herminie’s victory signals a potential shift in Seychelles’ political direction, with expectations of new approaches to governance, foreign policy, and economic management. His administration is likely to face immediate challenges, including tackling inflation, boosting tourism revenues post-COVID, and managing the country’s environmental vulnerabilities as a small island nation.

Regional leaders and international partners have begun to send congratulatory messages, expressing hope for continued cooperation on issues such as climate change, maritime security, and economic development.

The official swearing-in ceremony is expected to take place later this week, marking the beginning of Patrick Herminie’s first term as President of Seychelles.
