The Gabonese ruling party of President Brice Oligui Nguema has secured a decisive majority in Gabon’s parliament, according to results released after Saturday’s second round of voting.

The Democratic Union of Builders (UDB) is projected to claim 55 out of the 145 seats in the National Assembly, solidifying its dominance following a run-off held in 77 constituencies where no candidate achieved an outright win in the first round.

The main contest was between Nguema’s UDB and the Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG), the former ruling party of ex-president Ali Bongo, which managed to secure only three seats in the initial round.

This victory marks a significant political boost for President Nguema, who was elected in April, and it effectively concludes Gabon’s political transition following the August 2023 military coup that ended 55 years of Bongo family rule over the oil-rich Central African nation.
