Former President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed deep regret that the abduction of the Chibok schoolgirls in 2014 remains a lasting scar on his administration.

Speaking at the launch of the book “Scars: Nigeria’s Journey and the Boko Haram Conundrum” by former Defence Chief General Lucky Irabor in Abuja, Jonathan said he had expected his successor, the late Muhammadu Buhari, to end the insurgency.

He revealed that during his presidency, Boko Haram once nominated Buhari to negotiate on their behalf—an indication, he said, that many Nigerians believed the conflict would be swiftly resolved under Buhari’s rule.

Jonathan, however, emphasized that the Boko Haram crisis is far more complex than often portrayed, calling for renewed efforts to address its deep-rooted causes.
