The year 2025 marks the 25th anniversary of the UN Security Council Resolution 1325, a landmark framework for the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) Agenda, which was adopted in 2000.

This agenda aims to increase the meaningful participation of women in peace and security processes, prevent violence against women, protect women in conflict, and promote gender mainstreaming in relief and recovery efforts.

Several key stakeholders, including civil society representatives, women’s groups, and traditional leaders from across the African Union’s five regions, continue to discuss the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda.

There is an assessment of past achievements and plans for the future of women’s participation in peacebuilding, including ongoing challenges, while strategising on revitalising the WPS agenda going forward.

Pricilla Yagu Ciesay is the co-founder of the Women’s Organisation for women and victims’ empowerment in the Gambia. She speaks to WADR about the Women, Peace and Security Agenda.
