Senegal’s new directive banning the importation of bananas is now in full effect across markets nationwide. The policy aims to boost local production and reduce reliance on imports.
Local producers, through a memorandum of understanding, have pledged to meet the country’s annual consumption demand of over 130,000 tonnes. At Dakar’s Sandeniery market, trucks from Tambacounda recently delivered more than 2,400 cartons of bananas.
While producers are optimistic, traders have voiced concerns about the quality of locally grown bananas compared to imported ones. Many say consumers may struggle with the difference in taste, size, and durability.
Authorities insist the move will strengthen Senegal’s agricultural sector in the long term, but the challenge remains ensuring consistent supply and improved quality to satisfy market expectations.
