At least twelve people have drowned in northwestern Nigeria while trying to escape an armed group attack in Zamfara State.
The victims, mostly women and children, were crossing a river in a canoe when it capsized, authorities said.
The tragedy occurred as attacks by armed groups continue to terrorize rural communities in the region, forcing residents to flee for safety.
Local officials have launched a search operation while calling for stronger security measures to protect civilians in Zamfara and other affected states.
