At the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9) in Yokohama, Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama called on African leaders to address internal challenges as a foundation for global competitiveness.

Speaking amid rising protectionism and shifting trade dynamics, President Mahama emphasized that Africa has the population, natural resources, and investment potential to drive economic transformation.

However, he warned that lasting progress depends on creating conditions of peace, stability, and good governance. Without these, he said, efforts to attract investment and strengthen Africa’s role in the global economy will remain limited.

His remarks come as African leaders seek strategies to accelerate growth, deepen integration, and position the continent as a credible partner in international trade and development.
