Three leading environmental groups have sounded the alarm over an alleged illegal attempt to divert the Birim River near Apapam in Ghana’s Eastern Region. The river, regarded as sacred by local communities, flows through one of the country’s most vital ecological zones.

The incident is reportedly linked to a mining company, raising concerns about the growing environmental toll of extractive activities in the area. Advocates warn that tampering with the river’s course threatens not only water security but also the survival of the nearby Atewa Forest Reserve, home to rare species and a critical source of fresh water.

Environmentalists are calling for urgent government action to stop the diversion and hold those responsible accountable. They stress that protecting the Birim River is essential to safeguarding Ghana’s natural heritage for future generations.
