The Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has called on Nigeria’s government to cushion the impact of its economic reforms through targeted social safety nets.
Speaking in Abuja after a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday, the former finance minister commended the administration’s reform agenda but stressed the urgent need to protect the most vulnerable citizens.
She noted that while the policies could strengthen Nigeria’s economy in the long term, rising costs are already placing a heavy burden on low-income households, making immediate intervention critical.
