Ghana’s Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has called on African leaders to shift electoral competition from power struggles to policy-driven campaigns. Speaking at the African Political Parties Summit 2025 in Accra, she stressed that governance should focus on citizens’ needs rather than partisan gains.
She urged political parties to rise above narrow interests, embrace cooperation, and work together—even as strong opponents—for peace, development, and progress. According to her, tolerance among political actors is crucial for the continent’s stability and growth.
Highlighting the problem of policy discontinuity, the Vice President called for national development plans that would be respected by successive governments. She also challenged both ruling and opposition parties to safeguard stability during elections, warning that instability jeopardises livelihoods.
The three-day summit, themed “From Politics to Prosperity,” has brought together African Heads of State to discuss strategies for fostering unity and driving sustainable development across the continent.
