Amnesty International has sounded the alarm over escalating violence and human rights abuses in Nigeria’s south-east, where more than 1,800 people were killed between January 2021 and June 2023.

In its latest report, the rights group says both armed groups and security forces are responsible for killings, abductions, and destruction of property, plunging communities into fear and instability.

The organisation accuses the Nigerian government of failing to take meaningful action to address the crisis, warning that without urgent measures, insecurity will continue to devastate lives and livelihoods in the region.
