The Cape Verdean government has established a Crisis Office to coordinate urgent assistance for families in Salamansa, São Vicente, after torrential rains on August 11 wreaked havoc on the community and also struck the island of Santo Antão.
Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva made the announcement during a visit to the affected area, stressing the need for swift, organized relief efforts. The state of emergency declared for both islands will trigger the release of the National Emergency Fund and enable the mobilization of international aid.
Support is expected from partners including the European Union, the World Bank, and FIFA, which has pledged to help rebuild damaged sports facilities and provide humanitarian relief to affected residents.
