A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck Turkey’s northwestern Balikesir province on Sunday evening, killing one person and injuring 29, authorities said. Sixteen buildings collapsed in the tremor, which was felt as far as Istanbul.
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said the victim, aged 81, died after being rescued from rubble. Search and rescue efforts have now concluded, with no further casualties reported.
Turkey’s disaster agency AFAD said the quake hit at a depth of 11 km, while Germany’s GFZ measured it at 6.19 magnitude and 10 km depth.
