The Gambia has confirmed its first-ever case of monkeypox (Mpox), identified through the country’s routine disease surveillance system on July 18, 2025.
Health authorities say the patient is in stable condition and responding positively to treatment. In a statement issued Tuesday, the Ministry of Health reassured the public that there is no immediate cause for alarm.
Officials have launched emergency response measures, including contact tracing, community outreach, and virus sequencing to determine the specific strain.
