Two Burkinabè journalists, Luc Pagbelguem and Bukari Ouoba, were released late last week after months in custody under the country’s anti-terrorism requisition policy.
Their release follows a quiet wave of similar liberations involving critics of the military-led government, though authorities have provided no official explanation.
The World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT) has welcomed the move but is calling on Burkina Faso’s authorities to immediately release all remaining detained human rights defenders.
OMCT’s Senior Adviser for Africa, Isidore Ngueuleu, urged the government to uphold human rights standards and end arbitrary detentions.
